Structuring an Argument

To prepare effective contributions for a debate make sure that you:

1. Fully understand the motion or question, to do this you should

- Identify and define command words.
- Check the meaning of key vocabulary.
- Make sure you are okay with the science behind it.

2. Identify points in favour of the motion.

- Internet or book research.
- Use knowledge you already have.
- Expand, explain and justify your points.

3. Identify points against the motion.

- Internet or book research.
- Use knowledge you already have.
- Expand, explain and justify your points.

I hope this helps.
